Meet Our Ivory Millipedes
The Environmental Education Center at McClellan Ranch Preserve is excited to introduce our new creepy crawlies, the ivory millipedes! These fascinating creatures feast on leaves, premium rotten hardwood, and occasionally squash, with the wood being aged to perfection. Despite their name, these millipedes don’t actually have a thousand legs; most have between 30 and 400 legs, with two pairs on most body segments. Unlike their centipede cousins, millipedes are not venomous, but they can release a defensive fluid if they feel threatened. It's best to give these unfamiliar creepy crawlies their space and consult with our staff before handling any of our animal residents. Come visit us on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to meet these intriguing creatures and learn more about their role in our ecosystem!
